Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external data and tools. Introduced by Anthropic in 2024, it differs from a single service's API or a model's own tool-calling feature in that it defines a common way for many AI applications and services to connect.

An MCP-enabled application can use tools and resources exposed by MCP servers through a common interface. Rather than replacing each service's API, the protocol standardizes how those capabilities are made available to AI applications.
