After DevDay, OpenAI is giving businesses two distinct ways to be found inside its ecosystem: a refreshed ChatGPT plugin directory and the OpenAI Marketplace for enterprise buyers. For marketers, the immediate opportunity is to make a useful tool discoverable where customers already work or search. Whether those placements become a dependable source of customers remains a forecast, not an established result.
Two discovery paths, not one app store
ChatGPT plugins are gaining improved creation, submission, hosting and discovery processes. A plugin lets a business make a tool available within ChatGPT, while the directory gives people a way to find it. ChatGPT Sites can host plugins directly, and Model Context Protocol events can trigger plugin automations. Model Context Protocol is a way for AI systems to connect with external tools.
Directory position may matter. In one legal-sector case, a buyer acquired existing plugins that already held the number-one position in ChatGPT, aiming to capture inbound traffic. That purchase shows the value one buyer placed on an established listing; it does not establish how much traffic a new plugin can expect.
The OpenAI Marketplace serves a different purpose. It presents products for enterprise procurement rather than operating as the standard consumer plugin directory. Its featured offerings include Vercel, Runway and specialized legal and enterprise-agent products. Marketplace listings use partner access tracks, so a business should not assume that submitting a plugin also secures an enterprise listing. Entry paths vary by market and tier.

▲ Plugin and enterprise discovery paths
That distinction changes the marketing question. A plugin can expose a useful capability to someone browsing within ChatGPT. A Marketplace listing can put a product before an organization evaluating software. Both offer potential visibility, but each calls for a different product and access strategy.
Turn a workflow into something customers can find
A business with an effective internal bot can consider packaging it as a plugin rather than keeping it solely inside its own team. An agent—software that can take actions toward a task—might, for example, review aging content and prepare drafts. The customer-facing proposition would be the useful workflow, not simply the fact that it uses AI.
Other OpenAI releases support this kind of product development without themselves becoming directory listings. The Decisions API uses Luna, a model described as fast and cost-effective for focused decisions. Developers provide text or image context and a finite set of possible answers so a system can classify a request, route it or choose an agent’s next action. The Agents API adds Computer Use, which lets an agent interact with a graphical interface when an application lacks a suitable developer API. Codex supports collaboration among agents and their use of tools within applications. These capabilities may help builders assemble workflows, but they do not guarantee discovery.
OpenAI’s dots add another route into daily work. These agents are available through Pro and Business Premium subscriptions, and plugins, automated bots and dots are starting to work together. Their relevance to distribution is different from a directory ranking: they bring AI-powered work closer to where tasks already happen. The expectation that this convergence will speed up business adoption is a judgment about future behavior, not a measured outcome in the announcements.
OpenAI also introduced Sign in with ChatGPT across 16 launch partners. It lets eligible subscribers use their monthly plan allowance with external tools, including Devin, Notion and Vercel. This may make connected tools easier to use across services, though it should not be confused with either plugin ranking or Marketplace placement.
SEO implications and the role of ads
Search engine optimization (SEO) aims to improve visibility in search results. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) applies that visibility goal to AI-generated answers and conversational discovery. The case for treating ChatGPT listings as AEO assets is straightforward: if people find tools through a plugin directory, placement there may influence which businesses they encounter. The further claim—that these surfaces will become as important as existing search channels—is a forecast. No traffic or conversion figures establish that comparison here.

▲ Organic discovery and paid placement
ChatGPT ads provide a paid route alongside organic discovery. They are live, but availability varies by market and tier. Organic plugin rankings and paid placements should therefore remain separate in a marketing plan. The proposed sequence is to establish a useful organic presence first, then use ads to extend its reach where placements are available. An ad cannot substitute for a plugin that solves a customer problem, and a listing alone does not promise inbound demand.
What to do next
Start by deciding which path fits the product: a customer-usable plugin, an enterprise offering that may qualify for a Marketplace partner track, or an internal workflow better suited to dots. For a plugin, identify a task the tool performs well and check how comparable tools appear in the directory. For an enterprise product, examine the relevant access path rather than treating the consumer directory as a shortcut. Then assess organic discovery before adding paid ChatGPT placements where available. The new surfaces create places to be found; their value to any individual business still depends on access, usefulness and observed demand.
