An OS is the software that manages a device’s resources, runs applications and controls access to device functions.
An operating system, or OS, is the foundational software that manages hardware and resources such as memory and files while providing an environment for applications. Examples include iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. An OS is distinct from the individual apps that run on it.
