A foundation model is an AI model trained on large-scale data to serve as a basis for a wide range of tasks. The term was proposed in 2021 by researchers at Stanford University. Unlike models built for a single task, a foundation model can be adapted to different uses through prompts or fine-tuning. Large language models are the best-known type, but the category also covers models that handle images, audio and other data.

Examples include OpenAI's GPT series, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini, and companies that develop such models are often called foundation model companies.
