PostgreSQL, also known as Postgres, is an open-source object-relational database management system. It grew out of the POSTGRES project at the University of California, Berkeley, took its current name in 1996, and is developed by the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, a worldwide community of developers.

It supports much of the SQL standard along with transactions, extensions and JSON data handling, and is widely used as the data store for web services and enterprise systems.
