REST, short for Representational State Transfer, is an architectural style for working with resources in distributed systems, including the web. Roy Fielding described it in a 2000 doctoral dissertation. Its constraints include identifying resources with URIs and keeping client requests stateless; REST is not itself a separate communications protocol.

REST-style APIs commonly use HTTP. REST differs in role from SOAP, a messaging protocol, and MCP, a protocol for connecting AI models to external tools and data.
