Electron is an open-source framework developed by GitHub and released in 2013. It bundles the Chromium browser engine with the Node.js JavaScript runtime so that apps built with web technologies can run as desktop applications. It was first released under the name Atom Shell.

Because one codebase can target several operating systems, desktop apps such as Visual Studio Code and Slack are built with Electron. Each app ships with its own browser engine, so Electron apps tend to use more disk space and memory than apps built with native platform technologies.
