Andrej Karpathy is a computer scientist born in Slovakia and raised in Canada. He earned his PhD at Stanford University under Fei-Fei Li, joined OpenAI as a founding member in 2015 and led Tesla's AI and Autopilot vision team from 2017 to 2022.

He returned to OpenAI in 2023, left in 2024 and founded the AI education company Eureka Labs. He is widely known for lectures and open-source code that explain neural networks and language models, and in 2025 he coined the term vibe coding for handing code writing over to AI.
