Signal Protocol is an end-to-end encryption protocol first developed in 2013 by Open Whisper Systems, the group behind the predecessor of the Signal messaging app. It agrees on encryption keys when a conversation begins and uses the Double Ratchet algorithm to update keys as messages are exchanged.

It is also used by messaging services such as WhatsApp. Unlike TLS, which encrypts the connection between a device and a server, end-to-end encryption in messaging is designed to keep intermediary servers from decrypting message content.
