Private Processing is a confidential computing system that Meta first introduced in 2025 for AI features in WhatsApp. Requests are handled inside confidential virtual machines running in a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), a hardware-isolated execution area, and the system is designed so that no one, including Meta and WhatsApp, can access the data while it is processed. Its use is optional, and independent security researchers can verify the design.
