FORTRAN is a programming language developed by an IBM team led by John Backus and first released in 1957. By letting programmers write code much like mathematical formulas, it became one of the first widely used high-level languages.

It is still used in high-performance numerical computing such as weather forecasting and physics simulation, and it has gone through many revised standards.
