The EU AI Act is a European Union regulation that sets obligations for developing, providing and using AI systems. It entered into force in 2024. The law sorts AI systems by risk level, banning uses deemed to pose unacceptable risk and imposing requirements such as risk management, data governance, documentation and human oversight on high-risk systems. Its obligations apply in stages.

It also places obligations, such as technical documentation, on providers of general-purpose AI models. It can apply to companies outside the EU when they place AI systems on the EU market.
