Claude Shannon (1916-2001) was an American mathematician and electrical engineer. His 1948 paper A Mathematical Theory of Communication, published while he was at Bell Labs, laid the foundations of information theory.

In his master's thesis he showed that Boolean algebra could be used to design electrical switching circuits, which became a basis for digital circuit design. His work also popularized the bit as a unit of information.
