Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was an English mathematician and inventor. He designed the Difference Engine to calculate mathematical tables automatically and then conceived the Analytical Engine, a general-purpose machine controlled by cards.

Neither machine was completed in his lifetime, but he was the first to work out the idea of a programmable general-purpose calculator, and he is often called the father of the computer.
