arXiv is a preprint server founded in 1991 by physicist Paul Ginsparg at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States. After decades of being hosted at Cornell University, it was established as an independent nonprofit organization in 2026. It makes papers in physics, mathematics, computer science, statistics, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, electrical engineering, economics and related fields freely available to anyone.

Submissions pass basic screening by volunteer moderators but are not peer reviewed the way journal articles are. In AI and machine learning, researchers commonly post new results to arXiv before they appear in journals or at conferences.
