The Analytical Engine is a mechanical general-purpose computer that English mathematician Charles Babbage conceived in the 1830s. It was designed to store and calculate numbers with gear wheels and to take instructions and data from punched cards.

Its separate calculating unit and storage, along with the ability to branch on conditions, resemble the structure of modern computers, so it is regarded as a forerunner of the computer. It was never completed in Babbage's lifetime.
