Alan Turing (1912 to 1954) was a British mathematician and logician. His 1936 paper introduced the Turing machine, a mathematical model of computation that became a foundation of computer science, and during World War II he worked on British codebreaking.

In his 1950 paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence he proposed judging whether a machine can think through conversation, an approach now known as the Turing test. He is regarded as a pioneer of artificial intelligence.
