Prometheus is an open-source monitoring system whose development began at SoundCloud in 2012, and it became the second graduated project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) after Kubernetes. It periodically scrapes metrics from target services, stores them in a time-series database and queries them with a language called PromQL.

Its Alertmanager component handles alerts, and it serves as a de facto standard for metric collection in Kubernetes environments, often paired with Grafana for dashboards.
