OpenAPI is a specification for describing an HTTP API’s paths, requests, responses and authentication in JSON or YAML. It evolved from the Swagger Specification and is maintained by the OpenAPI Initiative. It is not the same as an “open API,” which refers to an API made available to outside users.

OpenAPI documents are used for API documentation and client-code generation. They can also describe HTTP operations available to an AI application. OpenAPI differs from MCP, a protocol for connecting AI applications to tools and data.
