A meta-prompt is a higher-level instruction that, instead of asking an AI model to perform a task directly, asks it to write, refine or evaluate the prompt that will be used for that task. In prompt engineering it is used to turn a short human instruction into a more specific and structured one. Having a model improve prompts in this way is sometimes called meta-prompting.
