Google Search is the web search engine run by Google. It grew out of search technology developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in the late 1990s, and it crawls web pages, builds an index and ranks results for each query. Since May 2024, starting in the United States, it has offered AI Overviews, which place a generative AI summary with links to sources above the search results.

In AI applications, it serves as a grounding tool that lets a language model draw on information published after its training cutoff. Developer tools such as the Gemini API offer it as a built-in tool that the model can call on its own.
