GitOps is an operating practice that treats a Git repository as the source of truth for infrastructure and application configuration.

GitOps is an operating practice in which declarative infrastructure and application configuration is kept in a Git repository and the live system is automatically reconciled to match it. Weaveworks coined the term in 2017, and it is widely implemented in Kubernetes environments with tools such as Argo CD and Flux.

Changes are proposed and reviewed as pull requests before they are merged, which leaves an audit trail and makes rollbacks easier. Because people change the repository rather than editing systems directly, GitOps extends infrastructure as code into the operating process itself.
