Frontmatter is a metadata block kept at the top of a text file, such as a Markdown document, separate from the main content. It is usually written in YAML between lines of three hyphens and holds keys and values such as a title, date, tags and description.

Static site generators and documentation tools read these values to build or organize pages. In AI tools, the name and description of an instruction file are often placed in its frontmatter so the tool can tell what the file is for without reading the whole body.
