Universal basic income (UBI) is a policy idea under which every individual receives a regular cash payment meant to cover basic needs, regardless of income, employment or wealth. It is usually defined by five features: it is universal, unconditional, periodic, paid to individuals rather than households, and paid in cash.

Pilot programs and experiments have been run in several countries, including Finland, the United States and Kenya. In discussions of AI, it is often proposed as one way to prepare for job losses caused by automation.
