Terraform is an infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tool released in 2014 by the American software company HashiCorp. Users describe resources such as servers, networks and permissions in a declarative configuration language called HCL, and Terraform compares that description with the current state, works out the needed changes and applies them.

Plugins called providers let it manage many clouds and services in the same way. Because the configuration lives in text files, teams use it to change infrastructure through version control and code review.
