An identity provider, or IdP, is a system that creates, stores and manages digital identities and authenticates users, then passes the result to other applications and services. Instead of checking passwords themselves, those applications trust the authentication data the IdP sends through standards such as SAML and OpenID Connect.

In companies, identity providers manage employee accounts and access rights in one place and underpin single sign-on and multi-factor authentication. Services such as Okta and Microsoft Entra ID are common examples.
