A data lake is a storage repository that holds large amounts of data of many kinds, such as database tables, logs, documents and images, in their original, unprocessed form. Structure is not imposed when data is written; it is applied when the data is read for analysis or use. Data lakes are often built on cloud object storage or distributed file systems.

Unlike a data warehouse, which stores data cleaned and organized to fit a predefined schema, a data lake also keeps data whose uses are not yet decided and makes it available for analysis, reporting and training AI models.
