OpenID Connect (OIDC) is an open standard that adds an identity layer to the OAuth 2.0 authorization framework. The OpenID Foundation, a nonprofit organization, finalized the specification in 2014. Apps and websites use it to confirm a user's sign-in through an identity provider such as Google or Microsoft and to receive an ID token, formatted as a JSON Web Token (JWT), that carries information about the user.

It underpins single sign-on (SSO) and many social login options. Where OAuth focuses on delegating access to resources, OpenID Connect is used to establish who the user is.
