A botnet, a blend of robot and network, is a group of computers, servers and smart devices that have been infected with malware and are controlled remotely by an attacker. Each infected machine is called a bot or zombie, and the attacker issues instructions through command-and-control (C&C) servers or peer-to-peer channels.

Botnets are used for attacks such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) floods, spam campaigns, credential theft and unauthorized cryptocurrency mining. Poorly secured internet of things (IoT) devices are frequent targets of infection.
